From Manila to Peking: Asian Treasures from the MacArthur CollectionOpening Reception March 6
Presented by the Courthouse GalleriesThe exhibit, pulled from the MacArthur Memorial’s collection of over 2,000 rarely shown artworks, were gifts to General Douglas and Mrs. MacArthur in appreciation for their contributions to Asian nations in the postwar-era.
The gifts, including Samurai armor, antique ivory figures, wood sculptures, cloisonné, porcelain, lacquered chests, and elegantly painted scrolls, came from the Emperor and Empress of Japan; the first president of the Republic of Korea, former Philippine Ambassador Carlos Romulo and China’s Madame Chiang Kai-Shek, among others.

Making a Mark - Open through March 25

Presented by the Children's Museum of VirginiaAn exhibit of art created by children touched by cancer. Sponsored by the Texas Children’s Cancer Center at Houston, the annual collection of art created by children from around the world is part of a very intensive art therapy program at the hospital.
Children who have cancer, or have siblings with cancer, are invited to make and submit a piece of art to Houston. After a judging, the art is hung in the Texas Children’s Hospital and then sent on the road for viewing at other museums and hospitals around the country.

IRONCLADS! - Saturday, March 7
Presented by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard MuseumJoin us as we commemorate the Battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862 between the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia. Come learn about the construction of ironclads during the Civil War, and serve as Naval Constructor as you build your own model of the USS Monitor and/or CSS Virginia.

First Sunday Afternoon - March 8
Presented by the Courthouse GalleriesA family day of fun that includes make-n-take art activities and artist demonstrations by local artists. Make-n-Take art will be made available by multi-media artist Lynne Sward. Ronnie Baum will demonstrate the art of Bonsai tree growing. Yasuko Zucker will demonstrate the art of Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging and Norene Spencer and Shaw Me Shen will demonstrate the technique of Sumi-e brush painting.

2009 Dates for Civic League Meetings: Meetings will be Friday Night Pot Luck get togethers with an agenda to be announced. They will be held in the NEAT Officer building adjacent to the Flagship. The building is an unmarked ranch house across the parking lot, with entry to the office at the back, via the porch.

Community Meeting With New Police Chief

On Thursday, February 19th at 5:45 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 500 Court Street, Olde Town Portsmouth, citizens will be meeting with Portsmouth's new police chief, Edward Hargis. We look forward to seeing Shea Terrace residents there!
