Reverse 911 is a system in which the PPD uses automatic dial technology to call you with important recorded announcements addressing weather emergencies, evacuations, crucial meetings, scams victimizing Portsmouth residents, crime trends in neighborhoods, etc. Statistics show that only 40% of such calls relating vital information are successful. Why? The database used is not comprehensive and does not include unlisted numbers or cell phone numbers. Police may not use unlisted phone number information except in emergencies vs. urgent announcements. Come to the next Civic League meeting to update your information to make sure that you stay “in the know.” An excel spreadsheet for interested households will be developed and submitted to PPD.
